SHADES

Shifting toward Healthy and sustAainable diets for safer, gREener and inclusive cities

The SHADES project aims to transform urban food systems by promoting healthy and sustainable diets, particularly through school meal programmes. It focuses on reintroducing the Mediterranean Diet as a key model for improving public health and reducing environmental impact.

The project leverages public food procurement as a strategic tool to drive large-scale dietary change. A multi-actor approach engages schools, families, policymakers, and local farmers to ensure systemic transformation. Artificial Intelligence is used to analyse dietary behaviours and support evidence-based decision-making. Innovative digital and educational tools are developed to improve food literacy across different age groups.

The project promotes collaboration between EU and MENA regions to share knowledge and best practices. It also supports local economies by strengthening short food supply chains and involving small-scale farmers.
